As the year comes to a close and as I was curious to see what the year’s favorites were, I knew I had to get the lovely Lxsx Frxnk for this year in review! She rolls deep with the Blisspop crew and works hella hard to make U Street Music Hall the place to be. Quite frankly I’m not sure DC would be as fun or magical without her. Here are her faves of 2012:
James Zabiela – “The Healing”
It’s no wonder this track has stayed in Beatport’s electronica top 10 since its release. Beautiful, emotional and atmospheric, “The Healing” gives me chills and leaves me feeling vulnerable every time I listen to it. It provides the perfect landscape for meditation, falling in love, making love…(a few of my favorite things).
Jimmy Edgar – “Sex Drive” (John Talabot’s In Aguirre Rework)
John Talabot’s In Aguirre Rework of Jimmy Edgar’s “Sex Drive” is just brilliant, and is one of the more powerful reworks I’ve heard in some time. I might go as far to say this is my favorite track of the year. Take everything I could possibly want or like in a song and put it together – this is it. This track gives a sound to raw human nature. John Talabot’s rework effortlessly adds a deeper element of spirituality and sexuality using ritualistic drum patterns, the contrast between dark soulless chants and soft female vocals, I could go on forever. 2012 has been a stellar year for both producers and I’m glad they put this together.
Uner – “Lapan To”
Recently became a fan of Uner, and nearly every techno/tech house production I’ve heard from him is on point. Happened to fall upon “Lapan To” when digging for tracks for my opening set for Magda at U Hall back in November, and it was perfection. Hypnotic tech house with a little bit of acid, and when played at the right time, at the right place, with the right crowd on the right night it’s damn near magical, and can take you into another dimension.
Daniel Dexter – “There Will Be Jazz”
This has been a signature track throughout my DJ sets this year. It’s the go-to that picks up almost crowd without fail. Warm, very sexy deep house track that incorporates a delicious whining of a saxophone right at the buildup that continues on after the drop throughout the track. I’d say that’s the key feature. From what I understand Daniel Dexter sampled the theme song from the Coen Brother’s 1984 film “Blood Simple” in this track too, which makes it even more great. If this song doesn’t make you feel sexy you might need to go to the doctor.
Rampa, Re.You – “The Track”
Love me some Hip-house! This was the first song I played on the roof of Rock ‘n Roll hotel last summer during the H St. festival (one of my favorite gigs of the year, no doubt) – and the crowd went nuts. This one of the funnest tracks to throw in the mix to hype people up. Have heard a lot of buzz about Rampa as of late, might want to keep an eye on him.
